The Barford Threesome

A father fantasy

GD McMorris is a hedge fund billionaire seeking to bring fundamental change to the social landscape. Like all good dads, he wants to do it for his kids. GD has thirteen children, and he certainly has the money. But can a rationally minded ‘one-percenter’ bring the world logically into line?

PJ Barford is an elegant millionaire who loves his golf and his farm, prides himself on being thoroughly in tune with the times, and he knows everyone who matters.  He should be a happy man. But PJ’s sons went bad. Now his pain is as big as his magnificent view over his rolling lands and down to the endless bay.

JR Briscoe is a journeyman actor who doesn’t even have children. But in his heart and mind he is King Lear. And Lear’s children make this king suffer royally.

Know thou this, that men / Are as the time is…Edmund.  – King Lear; V: iii

The setting : An elegantly appointed hobby farm amid the best hills money can buy. An exclusive golf club. A billionaire’s spectacular family compound on the edge of a small town on the shores of a vast bay. Present time, more or less.

GD and JR both need something from PJ. JR needs PJ’s money for his dream of Lear to come alive on stage. GD needs PJ to tell his lucky children what it’s like to live with the pain of the world upon his paternal shoulders. And PJ needs to share his shame for his sons’ crime.

The three men head out for a round of golf. PJ Barford leads the way, resplendent in his bizarre golfing clown attire, and his ridiculous golden shoes.
